Borderline personality disorder in adolescence: A focus on assessment and treatment (2024)

This live, interactive webinar will build upon our February 2022 webinar, which covered the evidence base for the existence of borderline personality disorder (BPD) in adolescents, as well as the effects of misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis. This program will focus on both categorical and dimensional approaches to conceptualizing, assessing, and treating BPD in adolescents.

After a brief recap of the prior webinar’s key points, the presenters will examine how to assess borderline personality disorder symptoms and touch upon the issue of diagnosing BPD in adolescent girls versus adolescent

Particular attention will be paid to recent changes in criteria, assessments that are appropriate for this population, and ways to distinguish the BPD diagnosis in adolescents from symptomatically similar conditions, such as bipolar disorder or PTSD. The presenters will then turn their attention to addressing the reluctance providers may feel when delivering the diagnosis with recommendations on how to deliver the diagnosis to clients and families in a way that minimizes anxiety and stigma. The evidence base for specific treatment recommendations will be discussed including alternative methods which may be used if dialectical behavior therapy for adolescents is not available. The final portion of the program will be dedicated to a case example illustrating these aspects of assessment and treatment. About the speakers

Borderline personality disorder in adolescence: A focus on assessment and treatment (1)

Dr. Lee a is a licensed clinical psychologist who supervises the clinical teams for the OCD and Anxiety Center Children’s Residential Care and the OCD and the Anxiety, and Depression Center for Adolescent Residential Care at Rogers’ Oconomowoc campus. Her primary areas of clinical interest include obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety disorders, culturally sensitive exposure-based treatment, and the treatment of children and adolescents in higher levels of care. Dr. Lee values topics related to ethics and diversity, equity, and inclusion; and incorporates these topics into training and supervision.

Dr. Scallon is a board-certified child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist who serves as the medical director of Focus Depression Recovery Adolescent Residential Care at Rogers’ Oconomowoc campus. Prior to joining Rogers, Dr. Scallon was a clinical associate professor and the director of the residency training program in child and adolescent psychiatry with the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. In addition to her extensive clinical and teaching experience, Dr. Scallon has served as an oral board examiner for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in the subspecialty of child and adolescent psychiatry.
