INDIA FROM 1-J "We were so happy to see their dance," Mahalakshmi said. "I feel we all came from the same place," added her husband, G. Narendra. By the time the monthlong creative period ended, the dancers were not only praying and rehearsing together they were exchanging high-fives, giving each other gifts and saying tearful farewells like members of a close-knit family. "The dancers were all so sad when the Indians left," Poll said.

"They are wonderful people to work They became very good friends." Until the Indians return next month for additional rehearsals, they are working on the ballet with Dhananjayan in Madras, and Poll is coaching his dancers in Akron. "Providence is guiding us through," Dhananjayan said. The ambitious concept of bringing the two companies together originated with Uma Ganesan, co-founder of Cleveland Cultural Alliance. "This was always my dream," she said last week by phone from Madras, India, where she was organizing a news conference for the Dhananjayans. "It crystallized when I saw 'Sanghamitra' onstage at the Ohio Theatre" in Playhouse Square.

Dhananjayan's "Sanghamitra" was previewed three years ago on the Cuyahoga Community College Showtime at High Noon Series. The success of the performance and the enthusiastic audience reception led Uma to share her dream of a crosscultural ballet with Lucille Gruber, director of CCC's cultural arts office. Gruber suggested Ohio Ballet as a potential partner, and the two women contacted Barbara Schubert, the ballet's associate director. Soon, the groundwork was completed for the arranged marriage of the two dance companies under sponsorship of the college and the cultural alliance. While Uma and Gruber set out to raise $160,000 to produce the ballet, Poll and Dhananjayan met to exchange artistic ideas.

Dhananjayan had previously choreographed an Indian version of "Mowgli," and was confident that an East-West interpretation So close, RES it's STAR BANK presents Spooky Cleveland Metroparks Zoo at the October 25 27, 200 of five 5:30 30, Halloween SAFE 31 exciting 9:00 Fun p.m. nights Tin a Lightly tickets for Boo at the Zoo are limited and will be sold on a basis. 446754H Visitors are strongly encouraged to purchase tickets in advance. 6 TO SAUS For more information call Finest AMERICAN GREETINGS it best (216) 661-6500 ext. 290 ZOO would work beautifully.

Poll was initially apprehensive about the aesthetics of blending "such defined and different classical idioms into a coherent statement." The funders arranged to send Poll to Madras last January. He returned with a profound appreciation for Indian culture and a receptiveness to classical Indian dance traditions that surfaced in his next ballet, "Bolero." At the first joint rehearsal of the two companies, Poll sensed that he and Dhananjayan spoke the same language. "I saw right away that he was theatricalizing the Indian classical dance into storytelling, and automatically P1 did the same thing." Much of the storytelling in "Jungle Book" is done by dancers who portray animals. Because of the aerial skills of ballet dancers, they are cast as birds, deer and other light-footed creatures. Because of the grounded technique of Indian dancers, they play elephants, monkeys and other animals that move with weight.

All will be costumed in fanciful feathers, fur and masks designed by Ohio Ballet resident designer A. Christina Giannini. The only humans in the cast are Mowgli, his mother and the village girl, Sita, who falls in love with him. The title role will be danced by Dhananjayan's son Satyajit. The female leads are taken by senior Indian dancer Padma Rasaiah as the mother and balle- THE PLAIN DEALER PDO VOICE INFORMATION SERVICE' On your touchtone phone, dial 999-5463 then enter a 4-digit code as soon as you hear the welcome.

Other principal roles" are danced by Narendra as the ferocious tiger who kills the mother, Dickinson as the head of the wolfpack that adopts Mowgli and Vanier as the bear who teaches the boy the ways of the jungle. "You have to be careful when you dance with the Indians," said Tejeda de Cerda.

"They use, real energy. There's no faking." Narendra explained that classical Indian dancers are taught to become the characters they portray and to "really feel" the emotions they express. Although he and his colleagues rank among the leading Indian classical dancers of their generation; Narendra said they needed to be leaner and fitter to keep up with the ballet dancers. Since returning to Madras, the Indians have been watching their diets, doing vigorous aerobics and getting plenty of sleep. Original music for the ballet was created in Akron by Indian composer Vijay Raghav Rao, who improvised rhythms and melodies as he watched the choreographers work together.

"It's like one soul in two bodies," he said. "It's a give-and-take of our culture and your culture." By the time Rao left Akron, he had sketched about an hour's worth of music, and the choreographers had completed the structure of the ballet. But when the composer returned to India and recorded the music with an orchestra, he expanded the score by about 25 minutes, and both choreographers had to make drastic revisions. Despite the difficulties of working long-distance with collaborators from another culture, Poll is pleased with the shape the ballet is taking. "I think it's going to be very attractive to the audience," he said.

"Our board was skeptical about it. Then, they came to a rehearsal, and they were fascinated. I think it will be particularly enjoyable for children. I can't wait until we get onstage." For your information Ohio Ballet premieres "Jungle Book: The Adventures of Mowgli" at 8 p.m. Nov.
