Duties

The Public Engagement Coordinator works under the direct supervision of the Public Affairs Officer. Is the leading Locally Employed Staff strategist/advisor responsible for the Consulate’s Public Diplomacy (PD) engagement with Emerging Voices (EV -- primarily youth, minorities, and others who are able to influence Canadian attitudes toward the United States using new, often digital, communication networks rather than prominent protocol positions or established institutions) and Established Opinion Leaders (EOL -- influential individuals and institutions such as think tanks, syndicates, labor unions, municipal and government entities, cultural institutions, professional associations, civil society organizations, prominent academics, and professional training institutions). Designs and recommends PD strategies and programs to connect with EV/EOL audiences to build and sustain productive dialogue, dispel inaccurate perceptions, and to promote understanding of and support for U.S. policy. Plans, develops, coordinates, implements, and evaluates projects and initiatives to engage EV/EOL audiences. Working with Mission EV, EOL, and Strategic Content Coordinator (SCC) Sections, tracks trends in emerging networks through direct engagement; analyzes relevant research, polling, and statistical analysis and analytics; designs and recommends PD strategies to connect with EV/EOL audience sectors to promote understanding of U.S. policy.

Qualifications and Evaluations

Requirements:

For the experience and education requirements, applicant must meet either option 1 or option 2 to qualify:

Option 1

EXPERIENCE:

Four years of progressively responsible experience in a multilingual, multicultural, multinational, academic or governmental work environment, with communications, project management, or education duties as a significant part of the job. Experience with audience or market analysis, marketing, and managing social media content is required.

EDUCATION:

University degree in political science, international relations, communications, American Studies, education, or related field is required.


Option 2

EXPERIENCE:

Six years of progressively responsible experience in a multilingual, multicultural, multinational, academic or governmental work environment, with communications, project management, or education duties as a significant part of the job. Experience with audience or market analysis, marketing, and managing social media content is required.

EDUCATION:

Two years of college study is required.

LANGUAGE: Fluent Speaking/Reading/Writing of English is required. This may be tested.

A “certification” is any written document from the armed forces that certifies the service member is expected to be discharged or released from active duty service in the armed forces under honorable conditions within 120 days after the certification is submitted by the applicant. The certification letter should be on letterhead of the appropriate military branch of the service and contain (1) the military service dates including the expected discharge or release date; and (2) the character of service. Acceptable documentation must be submitted in order for the preference to be given.
