Farm Art activities & Farm Sensory Activities - Pocket of Preschool (1)

Farm is a fun theme you can do either in the spring when farmers are busy planting or in the fall when farmers are harvesting. With so many things on a farm, the ideas and options for art, sensory, and fine motor activities are endless. I can’t wait for you to try out these farm art activities and farm sensory activities.

There are so many fun farm activities that I broke it up into three posts: Farm Math, Literacy, & STEM, (this one), and Farm Dramatic Play. You can check out all my Farm items in my TPT shop HERE.

Farm Sensory Activities

A farm sensory table is a perfect place to start. We just LOVE filling it with corn kernels, adding some small farm animals, small pom poms (students can pretend they are veggies), a few small scoops, tiny blocks, and of course, a few smalltractors for some fun sensory pretend play. Students can make a farm, pretend to be the farmer or one of the animals, or scoop the corn.
I bought seven bags of plain popcorn kernels to fill out the table.

Squirt some green and yellow paint on a piece of paper and sprinkle a few pieces of corn on top for texture. Students can exercise those fine motor muscles as they create fingerpainting with the chicken. Some of my students pretended the chicken was eating the corn as they painted!

I made mud slime, which is just plain slime with brown watercolor paint and gold glitter mixed in. Toss in a few small pigs or some veggie counters, and let the fun begin! Give the piggies a mud bath or plant some veggies; it’s up to you. Either way, your kiddos will have a ton of fun.

My kiddos are obsessed with play dough trays, so I made a farm-themed tray! When students play and create with play dough trays, they are problem-solving, exercising those fine motor muscles, exploring sculpture, sharing and using and building theme vocabulary.

Our farm play dough tray is filled with veggie counters, small farm animals, green play dough, and brown play dough (which I find in those big play dough packs). If you notice that the play dough gets stuck in the corn or other manipulatives, just soak it in water for a few hours, and it comes right off.

Farm art Activities

Typically, I’m not a big craft person, but sometimes they are just too cute! For the dramatic play center, we needed some chickens, so students MADE them in during small group time. It was a fun way to practice cutting circles, rectangles, and triangles. The chicken pattern is included in my Farm Dramatic Play pack in my TPT store.

We needed some piggies, too, so they created these cuties!

Farmers grow so many amazing veggies, so why not paint with them? It’s great fine motor work when they grasp and make prints with the potato. It would also be fun to paint with a few different veggies and see the types of prints or lines each one creates.

If your students LOVE flowers, print flowers with the end of a celery. These would make beautiful placemats for a Mother’s Day or end-of-the-year celebration.

We typically do our farm theme in the spring. This works out well because our students have developed and grown so much as little artists. They were skilled enough to create a farm mural. Each student painted one or two things on our mural. I love painting and making art together as a class to build a caring classroom community.
