What is Oil Pulling?

  • Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine that originated around 3,000 to 5,000 years ago. Oil pulling originated in India as part of natural healing practices described in ancient Ayurveda texts.
  • Oil pulling involves swishing a tablespoon of oil around in the mouth for 15 to 20 minutes and then spitting it out.

What are the Benefits of Oil Pulling?

  • Proponents claim it can help remove bacteria, plaque, and toxins from the mouth, improving oral health and potentially benefiting overall health.
  • Oil pulling may also reduce bad breath by removing odor-causing bacteria from the mouth and freshening breath.
  • This study suggests that oil pulling may also have anti-inflammatory effects, which could benefit oral health by reducing inflammation and preventing gum disease and gingivitis.

Ingredients

Find the complete ingredient list, with measurements, in the recipe card below.

  • Unrefined Coconut Oil – This has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which may help decrease and prevent harmful bacteria overgrowth in your mouth.
  • Peppermint Essential Oil – This is optional but we love it for its fresh taste and clean, refreshing sensation.

Expert Tip!

The quality of the oil is important here because it is going into your mouth. We use doTERRA oils because we trust their quality testing and sourcing. There are many other great brands, so do your research on which one you want to support.

Equipment

  • Glass Measuring Cup – We recommend using one with a pour spout.
  • Silicone Candy Mold – Choose one where the holes are approximately a tablespoon in size.

Step 4

Next, place the silicone mold on a small flat cutting board and pop it into the fridge. We use the cutting board because the bottom of the mold is unsteady, and you don’t want the liquid to slosh all over.

Step 5

After about an hour, the oils will harden and turn white in color.

Pop the bites out of the molds and transfer them to a glass mason jar with a lid for storage.

Substitutions

  • Instead of coconut oil, you can substitute sesame oil.
  • Substitute the peppermint oil for pure clove oil. Cloves are renowned in the natural healing world for helping to heal all kinds of dental issues, and pure clove oil may also be a beneficial source.

FAQS

How do you oil pull?

Start your routine by swishing the oil chews around in your mouth for 10-20 minutes. Then, spit it out into the trash. Do not swallow the oil. Also, do not spit it into your sink or toilet, as the oil will harden over time and could cause clogs in your pipes. After you have spat the oil out, follow up by flossing and brushing your teeth.

Does oil pulling work?

Many studies have found that coconut oil pulling may be beneficial to your gum health and could prevent cavities and plaque buildup.
However, scientific evidence supporting these claims is limited, and more research is needed to understand the potential benefits and risks of oil pulling fully.
If you’re considering trying oil pulling, it’s a good idea to consult with your dentist or healthcare provider first, especially if you have any existing dental or health conditions.

Storage Tips

To Store: Keep these bites in a sealed glass jar in the fridge for up to a month.

Instructions

  • Add your coconut oil to a glass measuring cup with a pouring spout. If your coconut oil is solid, add it to a small saucepan and melt it over low heat. This takes less than a minute – you don't want to heat the oil, just melt it.

  • Stir essential oil drops into the melted oil. Next, pour about a tablespoon of the liquid into each well of a silicone candy mold. There should be enough oil for 15 pieces.

  • Carefully place the mold in the fridge for the bites to harden. This can take 30 minutes to an hour. The bites will be hard and have turned white.

  • Pop them out of the mold and store them in the fridge in a sealed, glass mason jar for up to a month.
