*If you’re nervous about consuming raw flour, I suggest you toast it beforehand! Simply spread flour out on a baking sheet and cook for 5 minutes at 350 degrees F. Cool completely, then proceed with the recipe. You could also microwave the flour for 1-1 1/2 minutes. Other options are to use oat or almond flour in it’s place.
Cookie dough designed specifically for eating raw (such as that found in ice cream) is made either with pasteurized eggs or without eggs at all and heat-treated flour.
We do not recommend baking our Bite-Sized Edible Cookie Dough [flavor/products]. It does not contain eggs or leavening agents, which are key ingredients in developing texture and lift in baked cookies. (If needed) Exposure to high oven temperatures will cause the product to liquefy and possibly burn.
Ready-to-eat cookie dough is a delicious snack or dessert that can be enjoyed, but only when made safely, which would include using commercially processed heat-treated flour, ready-to-eat ingredients and using good sanitary practices when making the cookie dough.
Some people are concerned about the risk of salmonella and other organisms that can make you sick, but most cookie dough intended to be eaten raw is made without eggs, or with eggs that have been pasteurized, and with flour that has been heated to make it safe to eat.
While heat kills the bacteria, eating raw cookie dough (and similar mixtures, like cake batter) poses risks of food poisoning. E. coli and Salmonella can cause food poisoning symptoms like nausea, vomiting, cramps, and diarrhea. These unpleasant symptoms can last from several hours to days.
Eggs are commonly contaminated with Salmonella bacteria ( 1 ). Salmonella infection is characterized by fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramping beginning about 12 hours after consuming the contaminated food, and typically lasts up to 7 days ( 1 ).
When & Why Do You Need to Heat Treat Flour? Raw flour can contain bacteria like e.coli or salmonella so it's important to always heat your flour to a temperature of 160F before eating. (This is what makes eating edible cookie dough safe!)
The milk replaces the eggs in this edible cookie dough recipe. I recommend starting by using 3 tablespoons of milk. Then after all the ingredients have been mixed together (except for the chocolate chips) add more milk to reach your desired consistency.
If you insist on satisfying your cookie dough or cake batter craving, consider trying out an edible cookie dough recipe with heat-treated flour or pick up a package of Pillsbury's “Safe to Eat Raw” products.
"You can get sick if you eat unbaked dough or batter made with flour containing germs. Germs are killed only when food made with flour is baked or cooked." Sure, we may have grown up eating plenty of raw cookie dough, but when we're responsible for babies and grandbabies, no risk is ever worth it.
Many edible cookie dough recipes are made of flour, which you have to heat in order to kill any harmful germs. Instead of edible cookie dough buy regular cookie dough then bake it. Edible cookie dough is trying to mimic cookies.
Kind of like how crumbly dough is usually because there's too much of the dry ingredients, runny cookie dough comes from having too much of the liquid ingredients.
Soft – Dough that's “soft” or “runny” can be thickened by adding one or two tablespoons of flour to your mix. This will help keep your batch from “Spreading” and coming out of the oven looking like flat, not-so-cookie-like puddles.

Edible cookie dough lets you indulge in the sweet cookie taste with less guilt than grabbing for those cookies. Less guilt is also had by the non-bakers among us.
You might think that because vegan cookie dough doesn't contain eggs, you're not at risk of contracting a foodborne illness. But this isn't entirely true. According to the Centers for Disease Control, consuming raw flour is also a salmonella risk. “Flour doesn't look like a raw food, but most flour is raw,” it notes.
